Detailed Solution
Explanation
The legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle received the 48th Dadasaheb Phalke Award, for the year 2000. She was honoured for her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema through her singing over more than five decades.
Asha Bhosle was born on 8 September 1933 in Sangli, in present-day Maharashtra. She is the daughter of the classical singer and actor Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar. She began singing in films in the 1940s, and over a career spanning more than seven decades she has sung thousands of songs in many Indian and foreign languages. She is known for her remarkable versatility, singing film songs, ghazals, bhajans, pop, cabaret numbers, folk songs and classical-based songs with equal ease. She worked closely with composers such as O.P. Nayyar and R.D. Burman, whom she married in 1980. Her famous songs include "Piya Tu Ab To Aaja", "Dum Maro Dum", "Chura Liya Hai Tumne" and the ghazals of the film "Umrao Jaan" (1981), for which she won the National Film Award. She received the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. In 2011, the Guinness Book of World Records recognised her as the most recorded artist in music history.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest award in Indian cinema. It was instituted in 1969 to mark the birth centenary of Dadasaheb Phalke, the "Father of Indian Cinema", who made India's first full-length feature film, "Raja Harishchandra" (1913). It is presented by the Government of India at the National Film Awards ceremony. Its first recipient was the actress Devika Rani (1969). Lata Mangeshkar received it in 1989, and Manna Dey for 2007.
