The Sangeet Natak Akademi instituted the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar in which year?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — 2006

Detailed Solution

Explanation

The Sangeet Natak Akademi instituted the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar in 2006, the year of the shehnai maestro's death. The award is given every year to talented young artists, under the age of 40, in the fields of music, dance, theatre, puppetry and other performing arts.

Ustad Bismillah Khan (1916-2006) was the greatest shehnai player in the history of Indian music. He was born in Dumraon, in present-day Bihar, into a family of musicians, and moved as a child to Varanasi, where he learnt the shehnai from his uncle, Ali Bux, who played at the Kashi Vishwanath temple. He spent his whole life in Varanasi and was deeply attached to the city and the river Ganga. He raised the shehnai, which was traditionally played at weddings and temples, to the status of a classical concert instrument. He played at the Red Fort in Delhi on 15 August 1947, as India became independent, and on the first Republic Day in 1950. He performed at major festivals around the world. He received the Padma Shri (1961), the Padma Bhushan (1968), the Padma Vibhushan (1980) and the Bharat Ratna (2001). He was the third classical musician to receive the Bharat Ratna, after M.S. Subbulakshmi and Ravi Shankar.

The Sangeet Natak Akademi is India's national academy for music, dance and drama. It was set up by the Government of India and inaugurated in 1953. It gives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (Akademi Ratna), the Yuva Puraskar for young artists, and the Tagore awards. It also manages institutions such as the Kathak Kendra in Delhi.
