Answer: Option D — Benazir Bhutto
Detailed Solution
"Daughter of Destiny: An Autobiography" is the autobiography of Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan. It was first published in 1988 in Britain under the title "Daughter of the East" and in the USA in 1989 as "Daughter of Destiny".
About the book:
It describes her childhood in a powerful political family in Karachi, her education at Harvard University (Radcliffe College) and Oxford University, where she became the first Asian woman to head the Oxford Union debating society.
It covers the overthrow of her father, Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, by General Zia-ul-Haq in 1977, and his execution in 1979.
It describes the years she spent in prison and under house arrest, her exile, and her return to Pakistan in 1986 to lead the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
About Benazir Bhutto (1953-2007):
In 1988, at the age of 35, she became Prime Minister of Pakistan, the first woman to head the government of a Muslim-majority country.
She served two terms as Prime Minister (1988-1990 and 1993-1996). Both governments were dismissed on charges of corruption.
She went into exile again but returned to Pakistan in October 2007.
She was assassinated on 27 December 2007 in Rawalpindi, after an election rally.
Her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, later became President of Pakistan, and her son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari leads the PPP.
Other women leaders of South Asia:
- Indira Gandhi: India's first woman Prime Minister (1966); her book "My Truth".
- Sirimavo Bandaranaike (Sri Lanka): the world's first woman Prime Minister (1960).
- Sheikh Hasina (Bangladesh): Prime Minister for long periods; daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman; left the country in August 2024 after mass protests.
- Khaleda Zia (Bangladesh): Bangladesh's first woman Prime Minister (1991).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Sheikh Hasina is a Bangladeshi leader, not the author of this book.
- ✗Indira Gandhi's book based on her interviews is "My Truth".
- ✗Khaleda Zia was the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Quick tip
Remember: "Daughter of Destiny" (also "Daughter of the East") = Benazir Bhutto (first woman PM of a Muslim-majority country, 1988; assassinated 2007); world's first woman PM = Sirimavo Bandaranaike (1960).
