Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Short stories

Detailed Solution

"Galpaguchchha" (meaning "a bunch of stories") is the collection of Bengali short stories written by Rabindranath Tagore. It brings together most of his short stories, written mainly between 1891 and 1940.

About Galpaguchchha:

Many of the stories were written in the 1890s, when Tagore was managing his family estates at Shilaidaha and other places in rural East Bengal (now Bangladesh). His closeness to village life inspired stories about ordinary people.

Famous stories in the collection include:

  • "Kabuliwala": about the friendship between an Afghan dry-fruit seller (Rahmat) and a little girl, Mini.
  • "Postmaster": about a lonely postmaster and the orphan girl Ratan who serves him.
  • "Kshudhita Pashan" ("The Hungry Stones"): a ghost story set in an old palace.
  • "Samapti", "Atithi", "Dena Paona" and "Nashtanir" ("The Broken Nest").

Several stories were made into films: Satyajit Ray's "Teen Kanya" (1961) is based on three stories ("Postmaster", "Monihara" and "Samapti"), and his "Charulata" (1964) is based on "Nashtanir". "Kabuliwala" was filmed in Bengali (1957) and Hindi (1961, with Balraj Sahni).

Tagore is regarded as the pioneer of the modern short story in Bengali literature.

Tagore's other major works:

  • Poetry: "Gitanjali" (Nobel Prize in Literature, 1913), "Sonar Tori", "Manasi", "Balaka".
  • Novels: "Gora", "Ghare Baire", "Chokher Bali", "Shesher Kobita".
  • Plays: "Dak Ghar" ("The Post Office"), "Chitrangada", "Raktakarabi" ("Red Oleanders"), "Visarjan".
  • Essays and lectures: "Nationalism" (1917) and "The Religion of Man".
  • Songs: over 2,000 songs, known as "Rabindra Sangeet".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Poems: Tagore's famous poetry collection is "Gitanjali".
  • ✗Plays: Tagore's plays include "Dak Ghar" and "Raktakarabi".
  • ✗Essays: Tagore's essays include "Nationalism".

Quick tip

Remember: "Galpaguchchha" = Tagore's short stories ("Kabuliwala", "Postmaster", "Kshudhita Pashan"); "Gitanjali" = poems (Nobel 1913); "Dak Ghar" = play; "Gora" = novel.
