Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Kamala Das

Detailed Solution

"My Story" is the autobiography of Kamala Das, the Indian poet and writer who wrote in English and in Malayalam (under the pen name Madhavikutty). It was first written in Malayalam as "Ente Katha" and published in English in 1976.

About the book:

  • It describes her childhood in Kerala and Calcutta, her early marriage at the age of 15, her emotional life, her search for love and her experiences as a woman in a conservative society.
  • It was extremely bold for its time in discussing female desire, loneliness and identity, and it caused great controversy in Kerala.
  • It is often described as one of the most important confessional autobiographies in Indian literature.
  • She was reportedly considered for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1984.

About Kamala Das (1934-2009):

She was born in Punnayurkulam, Thrissur district, Kerala. Her mother, Balamani Amma, was a well-known Malayalam poet.

Her English poetry collections include "Summer in Calcutta" (1965), "The Descendants" and "The Old Playhouse and Other Poems".

She received the Sahitya Akademi Award (1985) for her English poetry ("Collected Poems").

In 1999, she converted to Islam and took the name Kamala Surayya.

The 2018 Malayalam film "Aami" was based on her life.

Autobiographies of other Indian women writers:

  • Amrita Pritam: "Raseedi Ticket" (The Revenue Stamp).
  • Ismat Chughtai: "Kaghazi Hai Pairahan".
  • Rassundari Devi: "Amar Jiban" (1876), the first autobiography by an Indian woman.
  • Baby Halder: "Aalo Aandhari" (A Life Less Ordinary).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Amrita Pritam's autobiography is "Raseedi Ticket".
  • ✗Mahasweta Devi is known for "Hajar Churashir Maa" and "Aranyer Adhikar".
  • ✗Ismat Chughtai's autobiography is "Kaghazi Hai Pairahan".

Quick tip

Remember: "My Story" ("Ente Katha") = Kamala Das (Madhavikutty, later Kamala Surayya); "Raseedi Ticket" = Amrita Pritam; "Amar Jiban" = Rassundari Devi (first by an Indian woman).
