Answer View answer โ–พ

Answer: Option A โ€” Keshavdas

Detailed Solution

"Ramchandrika" is a Hindi poem by Keshavdas, written in Braj Bhasha in 1601.

About Ramchandrika:

  • It tells the story of Lord Rama in 39 cantos ("prakash").
  • Unlike Tulsidas's "Ramcharitmanas", which emphasises devotion (bhakti), Keshavdas's work is known for its scholarship, rhetoric and use of many different metres and figures of speech.
  • It uses a wide variety of verse forms; for this reason it is sometimes called a "museum of metres" ("chhandon ka ajayabghar").

About Keshavdas (about 1555-1617):

  • He was a Hindi poet who lived in Orchha (now in Madhya Pradesh), in the Bundelkhand region.
  • He was the court poet of Raja Indrajit Singh of Orchha, and later was associated with Bir Singh Deo Bundela, the ruler of Orchha who was close to Emperor Jahangir.
  • He is regarded as the founder of the "Riti Kal" (the Riti or "mannerist" period) of Hindi literature, which emphasised rules of poetry, rhetoric and the description of love and beauty.
  • He was a master of "alamkara" (figures of speech) and "rasa" theory.

His other works include:

  • "Rasikpriya" (1591): a treatise on love and rasa; it inspired many Rajput and Pahari miniature paintings.
  • "Kavipriya" (1601): a work on the art of poetry, dedicated to the courtesan-poet Rai Praveen of Orchha.
  • "Virsingh Dev Charit": in praise of Bir Singh Deo.
  • "Jahangir Jas Chandrika".
  • Because of its scholarly complexity, he is often called the "poet of difficult poetry" ("kathin kavya ka pret").

Other poets of Hindi literature:

  • Tulsidas: "Ramcharitmanas" (in Awadhi), "Vinay Patrika".
  • Surdas: "Sursagar" (in Braj Bhasha), on Krishna.
  • Bihari: "Bihari Satsai" (Riti Kal; about 700 couplets).
  • Bhushan: poems praising Shivaji.

Why not the other options?

  • โœ—Tulsidas wrote "Ramcharitmanas".
  • โœ—Surdas wrote "Sursagar".
  • โœ—Bihari wrote "Bihari Satsai".

Quick tip

Remember: "Ramchandrika" (1601, Braj Bhasha), "Rasikpriya", "Kavipriya" = Keshavdas of Orchha (founder of Riti Kal); "Bihari Satsai" = Bihari; "Ramcharitmanas" = Tulsidas.
