Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Diwan-e-Hafiz

Detailed Solution

The 14th-century Persian poet Hafiz (Khwaja Shamsuddin Muhammad Hafiz Shirazi) is famous for his collection of lyric poems known as the "Diwan-e-Hafiz".

About Hafiz:

  • He was born around 1315-1325 in Shiraz, in Persia (Iran), and died around 1389-1390.
  • "Hafiz" is a title given to a person who knows the entire Quran by heart, which he is said to have done.
  • He spent most of his life in Shiraz.
  • He is regarded as one of the greatest poets of the Persian language.

About the Diwan-e-Hafiz:

  • A "diwan" is a collection of poems by one poet.
  • His Diwan contains mainly "ghazals" (lyric poems), along with some other forms.
  • His poems deal with love, wine, beauty, nature, mysticism (Sufism) and criticism of religious hypocrisy.
  • They can be read both literally and as spiritual allegories of divine love.
  • In Iran, his Diwan is found in almost every home, and people use it for "fal-e Hafiz" (divination), opening it at random to seek guidance.
  • His tomb in Shiraz (the Hafezieh) is a popular place of visit.

Hafiz and India:

  • Ghiyasuddin Azam Shah, the Sultan of Bengal, invited Hafiz to his court.
  • According to tradition, Hafiz declined the invitation, but sent a ghazal in reply, praising the Sultan.
  • His poetry greatly influenced Persian and Urdu poetry in India; poets such as Mirza Ghalib admired him.
  • He also influenced the German poet Goethe, who wrote the "West-Eastern Diwan" (West-ostlicher Divan) inspired by him.

Other famous Persian poets:

  • Firdausi: wrote the "Shahnama" (Book of Kings), the national epic of Iran (about 1010).
  • Saadi: wrote "Gulistan" (Rose Garden) and "Bostan" (Orchard) (13th century).
  • Jalaluddin Rumi: wrote the "Masnavi" (Spiritual Couplets) (13th century).
  • Omar Khayyam: famous for his "Rubaiyat" (quatrains).
  • Amir Khusrau: the great Persian poet of India.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Shahnama, Gulistan and Masnavi were written by other poets.

Quick tip

Remember: Diwan-e-Hafiz = Hafiz of Shiraz (14th century; ghazals; invited by Ghiyasuddin Azam Shah of Bengal); Shahnama = Firdausi; Gulistan = Saadi; Masnavi = Rumi.
