Detailed Solution
"Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" is a novel by the American writer Mark Twain, first published in 1884 in the UK and in 1885 in the USA. It is a sequel to "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" (1876).
About the novel:
- It is narrated by Huckleberry "Huck" Finn, a teenage boy who escapes from his abusive, drunken father.
- He travels down the Mississippi River on a raft with Jim, an enslaved man who has run away to seek freedom.
- During their journey, they meet many characters, including two con men called "the Duke" and "the King".
- Huck struggles with his conscience: society has taught him that helping a runaway slave is wrong, but his friendship with Jim leads him to decide, "All right, then, I'll go to hell", choosing to help Jim.
- The novel is written in local dialects of the American South and is a sharp satire on racism, slavery and hypocrisy.
- Ernest Hemingway famously wrote that "all modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn".
About Mark Twain (1835-1910):
- His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. "Mark twain" was a riverboat term meaning a water depth of two fathoms, which was safe for boats.
- He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, on the Mississippi River, and worked as a riverboat pilot.
- He was known for his humour and satire, and is called the "Father of American Literature" by some writers.
- His other works include "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" (1876), "The Prince and the Pauper" (1881), "Life on the Mississippi" (1883) and "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" (1889).
- He visited India in 1896 and wrote about it in "Following the Equator", describing India as "the cradle of the human race".
Other American writers:
- Herman Melville: "Moby-Dick" (1851).
- Nathaniel Hawthorne: "The Scarlet Letter" (1850).
- Jack London: "The Call of the Wild" (1903).
Why not the other options?
