Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Francis Fukuyama

Detailed Solution

"The End of History and the Last Man" is a book by the American political scientist Francis Fukuyama, published in 1992. It developed ideas from his essay "The End of History?", published in 1989 in the journal "The National Interest".

About the book:

It was written as the Cold War was ending, after the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989) and shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union (1991).

Fukuyama argued that the end of the Cold War might mark the "end of history" in the sense of humanity's ideological evolution, with Western liberal democracy and the free market emerging as the final form of human government.

He did not mean that events would stop happening, but that no serious ideological alternative to liberal democracy remained.

The "last man" refers to an idea from the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, and Fukuyama discussed whether people in a comfortable liberal society would lack higher goals.

He drew on the philosophy of Hegel, as interpreted by Alexandre Kojève.

The book was widely discussed and criticised, especially after events such as the 9/11 attacks and the rise of China.

About Francis Fukuyama:

  • He was born in 1952 in Chicago, USA, to a family of Japanese descent.
  • He is a scholar at Stanford University.
  • His other books include "Trust" (1995), "The Origins of Political Order" (2011), "Political Order and Political Decay" (2014) and "Identity" (2018).

Other important books on world politics:

Samuel P. Huntington: "The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order" (1996), which argued that future conflicts would be between cultures and civilisations. It was partly a response to Fukuyama.

Noam Chomsky: "Manufacturing Consent" (with Edward Herman).

Thomas Friedman: "The World Is Flat" (2005).

Why not the other options?

Samuel P. Huntington wrote "The Clash of Civilizations".

Noam Chomsky co-wrote "Manufacturing Consent".

Thomas Friedman wrote "The World Is Flat".

Quick tip

Remember: "The End of History and the Last Man" (1992; essay 1989) = Francis Fukuyama; "The Clash of Civilizations" (1996) = Samuel Huntington; "The World Is Flat" = Thomas Friedman.
