Answer: Option D — Chittaranjan Das
Detailed Solution
"India for Indians" is a collection of speeches and writings by Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das (C. R. Das), the nationalist leader from Bengal, published in 1917-18.
About the book:
- It contains Das's speeches on Indian nationalism, self-government and the political future of India.
- It reflects his belief that Indians should govern themselves according to their own culture and traditions.
About Chittaranjan Das (1870-1925):
He was born on 5 November 1870 in Calcutta.
He was a leading lawyer. He became famous in 1908-09 for successfully defending Aurobindo Ghose in the Alipore Bomb Case.
He gave up his lucrative legal practice to join the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-22).
He presided over the Gaya session of the Indian National Congress (1922).
When Mahatma Gandhi withdrew the Non-Cooperation Movement after the Chauri Chaura incident (February 1922), Das and Motilal Nehru wanted to contest the elections to the legislative councils and oppose the government from within.
In January 1923, they founded the Swaraj Party (Congress-Khilafat Swaraj Party). Das was its president and Motilal Nehru its secretary.
In 1924, he became the first Mayor of the Calcutta Corporation, with Subhas Chandra Bose as Chief Executive Officer.
Subhas Chandra Bose regarded him as his political guru.
He was given the title "Deshbandhu" ("Friend of the Nation").
He was also a poet; his Bengali poetry collections include "Malancha" and "Sagar Sangeet".
He founded the newspaper "Forward" and started "Banglar Katha".
Before his death, he donated his house and property to the nation; his house in Calcutta became the Chittaranjan Seva Sadan hospital.
The Chittaranjan Locomotive Works and the town of Chittaranjan in West Bengal are named after him.
Other leaders:
- Bipin Chandra Pal: part of "Lal-Bal-Pal"; edited "New India".
- Motilal Nehru: co-founder of the Swaraj Party; drafted the Nehru Report (1928).
- Surendranath Banerjee: "A Nation in Making"; founded the Indian Association (1876).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Bipin Chandra Pal was part of the "Lal-Bal-Pal" trio.
- ✗Motilal Nehru co-founded the Swaraj Party.
- ✗Surendranath Banerjee wrote "A Nation in Making".
Quick tip
Remember: "India for Indians" = C. R. Das ("Deshbandhu"; Swaraj Party 1923 with Motilal Nehru; first Mayor of Calcutta 1924; Subhas Bose's political guru); "A Nation in Making" = Surendranath Banerjee.
