Answer: Option C — Dadabhai Naoroji
Detailed Solution
"Poverty and Un-British Rule in India" is a book by Dadabhai Naoroji, published in London in 1901. It was based on papers and speeches he had presented over several decades, including "The Poverty of India" (1876).
About the book:
It put forward the "drain of wealth" theory. Naoroji argued that a large part of India's wealth was being drained to Britain every year, without any economic return, through:
Salaries, pensions and allowances of British officials and soldiers paid from Indian revenues.
"Home charges", such as interest on loans and the expenses of the India Office in London.
Profits of British companies and traders.
He estimated India's national income and per capita income (about Rs 20 per head per year in 1867-68), one of the first such estimates, and argued that this was too low even for basic survival.
He called British rule "un-British" because it went against the British ideals of justice and fairness.
About Dadabhai Naoroji (1825-1917):
- He was born in Bombay into a Parsi family.
- He is called the "Grand Old Man of India" and the "Unofficial Ambassador of India" in Britain.
- He founded the East India Association in London (1866) to present Indian views to the British public.
He was one of the founders of the Indian National Congress (1885) and its President three times: Calcutta (1886), Lahore (1893) and Calcutta (1906). At the 1906 session, he declared "Swaraj" (self-government) as the goal of the Congress.
In 1892, he was elected to the British House of Commons as a Liberal Party member from Finsbury Central, becoming the first Asian to be a British MP.
Other economic nationalists:
- C. Dutt: "The Economic History of India".
- G. Ranade: "Essays on Indian Economics".
- V. Joshi: wrote on economic questions in Maharashtra.
Why not the other options?
- ✗C. Dutt wrote "The Economic History of India".
- ✗G. Ranade wrote "Essays on Indian Economics".
- ✗V. Joshi was an economist associated with Ranade.
Quick tip
Remember: "Poverty and Un-British Rule in India" (1901, drain theory) = Dadabhai Naoroji ("Grand Old Man"; first Asian British MP 1892; Swaraj goal at 1906 Congress).
