Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Anne Frank

Detailed Solution

"The Diary of a Young Girl" (also called "The Diary of Anne Frank") is the diary kept by Anne Frank, a Jewish girl, while she and her family hid from the Nazis in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, during World War II.

About the diary:

  • Anne received a red-and-white checked diary for her 13th birthday on 12 June 1942.
  • In July 1942, her family went into hiding in a secret annex ("Achterhuis") behind a bookcase, in the building where her father, Otto Frank, had his business.

For about two years, eight people lived there in hiding. Anne wrote about daily life, her fears, her hopes, her conflicts with her mother, her growing up and her dreams of becoming a writer. She addressed her entries to an imaginary friend, "Kitty".

On 4 August 1944, the hiding place was discovered, and the family was arrested and sent to concentration camps.

Anne died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in early 1945, at the age of 15.

Her father, Otto Frank, was the only member of the family to survive. Miep Gies, one of the helpers, had saved Anne's diary, and Otto published it in Dutch in 1947 as "Het Achterhuis" ("The Secret Annex").

It has been translated into more than 70 languages and is one of the most widely read books in the world.

The Anne Frank House in Amsterdam is now a museum.

UNESCO added the diary to its "Memory of the World" Register in 2009.

A famous line from the diary: "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart."

Other famous life stories:

  • Helen Keller: "The Story of My Life" (1903), about overcoming deafness and blindness.
  • Malala Yousafzai: "I Am Malala" (2013).
  • Maya Angelou: "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" (1969).
  • Viktor Frankl: "Man's Search for Meaning", another Holocaust account.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Helen Keller wrote "The Story of My Life".
  • ✗Malala Yousafzai wrote "I Am Malala".
  • ✗Maya Angelou wrote "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings".
