Answer: Option C — Rudyard Kipling
Detailed Solution
"Kim" is a novel by the British writer Rudyard Kipling, first published in 1901. It is set in India under British rule.
About the novel:
The hero, Kimball O'Hara ("Kim"), is the orphaned son of an Irish soldier, who grows up on the streets of Lahore. He speaks local languages and can pass easily as an Indian boy.
The novel opens with Kim sitting on the big cannon "Zam-Zammah" in front of the Lahore Museum.
Kim becomes the disciple (chela) of an old Tibetan lama who is searching for the "River of the Arrow", whose waters can free a person from the cycle of rebirth.
At the same time, Kim is recruited by British intelligence to work as a spy in the "Great Game", the rivalry between Britain and Russia for influence in Central Asia.
The novel describes the Grand Trunk Road, the Himalayas and the many peoples, religions and cultures of India with great detail and affection.
About Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936):
He was born on 30 December 1865 in Bombay (Mumbai). His father, John Lockwood Kipling, was an artist and teacher at the Sir J. J. School of Art and later curator of the Lahore Museum.
He worked as a journalist in Lahore and Allahabad.
His other famous works include "The Jungle Book" (1894) and "The Second Jungle Book", featuring Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera and Shere Khan; "Just So Stories" (1902); and poems such as "If—", "Gunga Din" and "The White Man's Burden".
In 1907, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature. He was the first English-language writer to receive it and, at 41, remains the youngest Nobel laureate in Literature.
His views on empire have been criticised, but his writing about India remains widely read.
Other British writers about India:
- M. Forster: "A Passage to India" (1924).
- Jim Corbett: "Man-Eaters of Kumaon" (1944).
- Paul Scott: "The Raj Quartet" (beginning with "The Jewel in the Crown").
Why not the other options?
- ✗M. Forster wrote "A Passage to India".
- ✗Jim Corbett wrote "Man-Eaters of Kumaon".
- ✗Paul Scott wrote "The Raj Quartet".
Quick tip
Remember: "Kim" (1901; Kim and the Tibetan lama; the "Great Game") and "The Jungle Book" = Rudyard Kipling (born in Bombay; Nobel 1907, youngest literature laureate); "A Passage to India" = E. M. Forster.
