Answer: Option B — Amar Jiban

Detailed Solution

"Amar Jiban" ("My Life"), written in Bengali by Rassundari Devi and published in 1876, is regarded as the first full-length autobiography written by an Indian woman, and the first autobiography in the Bengali language.

About the author and the book:

Rassundari Devi (about 1809-1899) was born in Potajia village (now in Bangladesh) and was married at the age of 12 into a landowning family in Faridpur.

In those days, girls were not allowed to learn to read and write. Rassundari secretly taught herself to read by hiding a page of a religious book (the Chaitanya Bhagavata) in the kitchen and comparing its letters with the letters her son was learning.

Later she also learned to write.

In "Amar Jiban", written when she was nearly 60, she describes her childhood, her early marriage, her endless household work, her deep religious devotion, and her struggle to become literate.

The book was praised by writers such as Jyotirindranath Tagore, who wrote an introduction to a later edition.

An expanded second part was published in 1906.

Other early writings by Indian women:

  • Tarabai Shinde: "Stri Purush Tulana" (1882), a Marathi essay comparing men and women and attacking gender inequality; regarded as one of the first modern feminist texts in India.
  • Pandita Ramabai: "The High-Caste Hindu Woman" (1887).
  • Lakshmibai Tilak: "Smriti Chitre" (Marathi memoir, 1934-37), about her life with her husband, the poet Narayan Vaman Tilak.
  • Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain: "Sultana's Dream" (1905), an early feminist science-fiction story.
  • Binodini Dasi: "Amar Katha" (1912-13), autobiography of a Bengali stage actress.

Later autobiographies:

  • Kamala Das: "My Story".
  • Amrita Pritam: "Raseedi Ticket".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗"Stri Purush Tulana" is an essay by Tarabai Shinde, not an autobiography.
  • ✗"My Story" is Kamala Das's 20th-century autobiography.
  • ✗"Smriti Chitre" is Lakshmibai Tilak's memoir (1930s).

Quick tip

Remember: First autobiography by an Indian woman = "Amar Jiban" by Rassundari Devi (Bengali, 1876); "Stri Purush Tulana" = Tarabai Shinde (1882); "Amar Katha" = Binodini Dasi.
