Answer: Option D — Kapilendra Deva
Detailed Solution
The Gajapati (Suryavamshi) dynasty of Odisha was established by Kapilendra Deva (Kapileswar Routray) in 1435 CE.
About Kapilendra Deva:
- He ruled from 1435 to 1467 CE.
- He was originally a minister or military commander of the last Eastern Ganga king, Bhanudeva IV.
- He seized the throne and founded the Suryavamshi Gajapati dynasty.
- He was a powerful ruler who expanded the kingdom; his empire extended from the Ganga in the north to the Kaveri in the south, according to some accounts.
- He fought against the Bahmani sultans, the Vijayanagara rulers and the sultans of Bengal and Jaunpur.
- He took the title "Gajapati" ("lord of elephants"), which was used by the rulers of Odisha.
- He was a patron of Sanskrit and Odia literature; the Odia "Mahabharata" of Sarala Das was written around his time.
Important Gajapati rulers:
- Kapilendra Deva: the founder.
- Purushottama Deva: his son; according to legend, he married the princess of Kanchi after the Kanchi-Kaveri expedition, a famous story in Odia tradition.
- Prataparudra Deva (1497-1540): fought Krishnadeva Raya of Vijayanagara, who defeated him and married his daughter; he was a follower of Sri Chaitanya, who lived in Puri during his reign.
- The Gajapati dynasty declined in the 16th century, and Odisha later came under the Afghans and the Mughals.
The Gajapati title today:
- The Gajapati Maharaja of Puri is the traditional "first servant" of Lord Jagannath, and performs the "Chhera Pahanra" (sweeping the chariot) ritual during the Rath Yatra.
- The Gajapati district of Odisha is named after the dynasty.
Earlier dynasties of Odisha:
- Eastern Ganga dynasty (11th-15th centuries): built the Jagannath and Konark temples.
- Somavamshi and Bhauma-Kara dynasties (earlier).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Anantavarman Chodaganga and Narasimhadeva I were Eastern Ganga kings.
- ✗Prataparudra Deva was a later Gajapati ruler.
Quick tip
Remember: Gajapati dynasty of Odisha = founded by Kapilendra Deva in 1435; Prataparudra Deva = defeated by Krishnadeva Raya, follower of Chaitanya; Gajapati of Puri = Chhera Pahanra.
