Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Mutamad Khan

Detailed Solution

The "Iqbalnama-i-Jahangiri" ("Book of the Fortune of Jahangir"), a history of the reign of the Mughal emperor Jahangir, was written in Persian by Mutamad Khan, an official and historian of Jahangir's court.

About Mutamad Khan:

  • His real name was Muhammad Sharif.
  • He served as a Bakhshi (military paymaster) and held other posts under Jahangir.
  • He was a close follower of Jahangir and took part in his court life and campaigns.

About the Iqbalnama-i-Jahangiri:

It was completed during the reign of Shah Jahan (around 1630s).

It is divided into three volumes:

  • The first deals with the ancestors of the Mughals, including Babur and Humayun.
  • The second deals with the reign of Akbar.
  • The third deals with the reign of Jahangir.
  • It is an important source for the history of Jahangir's reign, especially for the later years, which are not covered fully by Jahangir's own memoirs.

Jahangir's memoirs:

  • Jahangir wrote his own memoirs, covering the first seventeen or so years of his reign.
  • When Jahangir became too ill to write, Mutamad Khan was asked to continue them, and he wrote the account for the following years.

Other historians of the Mughal period:

  • Abul Fazl: wrote the history of Akbar's reign.
  • Abdul Qadir Badauni: wrote a critical history of Akbar's reign.
  • Nizamuddin Ahmad: wrote a general history up to Akbar's time.
  • Khafi Khan: wrote "Muntakhab-ul-Lubab", a history of the Mughals up to the reign of Muhammad Shah; he secretly wrote about Aurangzeb's reign, which Aurangzeb had forbidden to be recorded officially.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Badauni and Nizamuddin Ahmad wrote about Akbar's period.
  • ✗Khafi Khan wrote a general history of the Mughals.

Quick tip

Remember: Iqbalnama-i-Jahangiri = Mutamad Khan (three volumes; he also continued Jahangir's memoirs); Khafi Khan = Muntakhab-ul-Lubab.
