Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Rabindranath Tagore

Detailed Solution

"Bhanusingha" (Bhanu Singha) was a pseudonym used by Rabindranath Tagore for a set of early poems, "Bhanusingha Thakurer Padabali" ("Songs of Bhanusingha Thakur").

About the Bhanusingha poems:

  • Tagore wrote these poems when he was a teenager, beginning around 1877 (when he was about 16).
  • They were written in Brajabuli, an artificial literary language based on Maithili and Bengali, which had been used by Vaishnava poets of Bengal and Odisha to sing of the love of Radha and Krishna.
  • The poems are about the love of Radha and Krishna, in the style of medieval Vaishnava poets such as Vidyapati.
  • Tagore published them as the newly discovered works of a medieval poet named "Bhanusingha" ("Bhanu" means sun, which is "Rabi" in another form; "Singha" means lion).
  • Many readers believed that they were genuine old poems.
  • They were published as a book in 1884.

About Rabindranath Tagore:

  • He was born on 7 May 1861 in Calcutta, in the famous Tagore family of Jorasanko.
  • He was a poet, novelist, playwright, composer, painter, educationist and philosopher.
  • He wrote more than 2,000 songs (Rabindrasangeet).
  • His collection of poems "Gitanjali" (English version, 1912) made him famous worldwide.
  • He wrote the national anthems of India and Bangladesh.
  • He founded a school at Santiniketan, which grew into a university.
  • His famous works include "Ghare Baire", "Chokher Bali", "Kabuliwala" and "The Post Office".
  • He was called "Gurudev".
  • He died on 7 August 1941.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Bankim Chandra, Kazi Nazrul Islam and Michael Madhusudan Dutt were other Bengali writers.
