Answer: Option A — Kalidasa

Detailed Solution

"Ritusamhara" ("The Gathering of the Seasons") is a Sanskrit poem attributed to Kalidasa, the greatest poet and dramatist of classical Sanskrit literature. It is generally regarded as one of his earliest works.

About Ritusamhara:

It has six cantos (sargas), one for each of the six seasons (ritus) of the Indian year:

  • Grishma (summer).
  • Varsha (rainy season / monsoon).
  • Sharad (autumn).
  • Hemanta (pre-winter).
  • Shishira (winter).
  • Vasanta (spring).
  • Each canto describes the beauty of nature in that season, the changes in plants, animals and the sky, and the moods of lovers.
  • It is admired for its vivid and sensuous descriptions of nature.

Kalidasa's major works:

Plays:

"Abhijnanashakuntalam" (The Recognition of Shakuntala): his most famous play, about King Dushyanta and Shakuntala. It was translated into English by Sir William Jones (1789) and greatly admired by the German poet Goethe.

"Vikramorvashiyam": the love story of King Pururavas and the celestial nymph Urvashi.

"Malavikagnimitram": about King Agnimitra of the Shunga dynasty and Malavika.

Long poems (mahakavyas):

  • "Raghuvamsha": the history of the Raghu dynasty (the family of Rama).
  • "Kumarasambhava": the birth of Kumara (Kartikeya), son of Shiva and Parvati.

Lyric poems (khandakavyas):

  • "Meghaduta" (The Cloud Messenger): a yaksha sends a message to his wife through a cloud.
  • "Ritusamhara".

About Kalidasa:

  • He is believed to have lived in the 4th-5th century CE and is traditionally linked with the court of Chandragupta II (Vikramaditya) of the Gupta dynasty, as one of the "Navaratnas" (nine gems).
  • He is called the "Shakespeare of India".

Other Sanskrit writers:

  • Bhasa: "Svapnavasavadattam".
  • Banabhatta: "Harshacharita" and "Kadambari".
  • Bharavi: "Kiratarjuniya".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Bhasa wrote "Svapnavasavadattam".
