Which was the first novel of Chetan Bhagat?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Five Point Someone

Detailed Solution

"Five Point Someone: What Not to Do at IIT!" was the first novel of Chetan Bhagat, published in 2004.

About the novel:

It is set at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, where Chetan Bhagat himself studied.

It tells the story of three friends, Hari, Ryan and Alok, who struggle with the pressure of grades and the rigid academic system. Their grade point average (GPA) is just above five out of ten, hence the title.

It became a huge best-seller and made Bhagat one of the most widely read writers of English fiction in India.

It was adapted into the Hindi film "3 Idiots" (2009), directed by Rajkumar Hirani and starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. The film became one of the biggest hits of Indian cinema.

About Chetan Bhagat:

  • He was born in 1974 in New Delhi.
  • He studied at IIT Delhi and IIM Ahmedabad and worked as an investment banker in Hong Kong before becoming a full-time writer.
  • His novels are written in simple English and are popular among young readers.

Films based on his novels:

  • "One Night @ the Call Center" (2005): film "Hello" (2008).
  • "The 3 Mistakes of My Life" (2008): film "Kai Po Che!" (2013).
  • "2 States: The Story of My Marriage" (2009): film "2 States" (2014).
  • "Half Girlfriend" (2014): film "Half Girlfriend" (2017).

His other books include "Revolution 2020" (2011), "One Indian Girl" (2016), "The Girl in Room 105" (2018), "One Arranged Murder" (2020), "400 Days" (2021) and non-fiction such as "What Young India Wants" and "Making India Awesome".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗"One Night @ the Call Center" (2005) was his second novel.
  • ✗"2 States" (2009) was based on his own inter-state marriage.
  • ✗"The 3 Mistakes of My Life" (2008) was adapted into "Kai Po Che!".
