Who is the author of 'A Nation in Making'?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Surendranath Banerjee

Detailed Solution

"A Nation in Making: Being the Reminiscences of Fifty Years of Public Life" is the autobiography of Surendranath Banerjee, one of the leading early nationalists of India. It was published in 1925, the year he died.

About the book:

  • It describes his life and public work over five decades and gives a valuable account of the growth of Indian nationalism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
  • It covers the founding of the Indian Association, the early sessions of the Indian National Congress, the agitation against the Partition of Bengal (1905) and the Swadeshi movement.

About Surendranath Banerjee (1848-1925):

He passed the Indian Civil Service (ICS) examination in 1869 but was dismissed from service in 1874 on minor grounds, which many saw as racial discrimination.

He founded the Indian Association in Calcutta in 1876 with Ananda Mohan Bose. It was one of the most important political bodies before the Congress.

He organised the "All India National Conference" in 1883 and 1885, which later merged with the Indian National Congress.

He was President of the Indian National Congress twice: at Poona (1895) and Ahmedabad (1902).

He edited the newspaper "The Bengalee".

He was called "Rashtraguru" and "Surrender Not" Banerjee.

He was a Moderate leader and later supported the Montagu-Chelmsford Reforms, which made him unpopular with the Extremists.

Autobiographies and writings of other nationalists:

  • Dadabhai Naoroji: "Poverty and Un-British Rule in India".
  • Bal Gangadhar Tilak: "Gita Rahasya" (written in Mandalay jail) and "The Arctic Home in the Vedas".
  • Bipin Chandra Pal: "Memories of My Life and Times".
  • Lala Lajpat Rai: "Unhappy India" and "Young India".
  • Jawaharlal Nehru: "An Autobiography".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Dadabhai Naoroji wrote "Poverty and Un-British Rule in India".
  • ✗Bal Gangadhar Tilak wrote "Gita Rahasya" and "The Arctic Home in the Vedas".
  • ✗Bipin Chandra Pal wrote "Memories of My Life and Times".

Quick tip

Remember: "A Nation in Making" = Surendranath Banerjee (1925; Indian Association 1876; INC President 1895 and 1902; "Rashtraguru"); "Gita Rahasya" = Tilak.
