Who is the author of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Lewis Carroll

Detailed Solution

"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" is a children's novel by the English writer Lewis Carroll, published in 1865.

About the book:

Alice, a young girl, follows a White Rabbit with a pocket watch down a rabbit hole and falls into a strange fantasy world called Wonderland.

She grows larger and smaller after eating and drinking magical things, and meets strange characters such as the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Caterpillar, the Duchess and the Queen of Hearts, who keeps shouting "Off with their heads!"

The story is full of word play, logic puzzles, riddles and nonsense, and it parodies the manners and rules of Victorian society.

The sequel, "Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There" (1871), includes the nonsense poem "Jabberwocky" and characters such as Tweedledum and Tweedledee and Humpty Dumpty.

The illustrations by John Tenniel became famous.

About Lewis Carroll (1832-1898):

  • His real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.
  • He was a mathematics lecturer at Christ Church, Oxford, and also a pioneering photographer.

He told the story to Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, and her sisters during a boat trip on the River Thames in July 1862. Alice asked him to write it down.

He also wrote books on mathematics and logic, such as "Symbolic Logic", and the nonsense poem "The Hunting of the Snark".

Other famous children's authors:

  • M. Barrie: "Peter Pan" (1904 play; 1911 novel "Peter and Wendy").
  • Roald Dahl: "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "Matilda", "The BFG".
  • Rudyard Kipling: "The Jungle Book" (1894), "Just So Stories" and "Kim"; Nobel Prize in Literature (1907).
  • Enid Blyton: "The Famous Five", "Noddy".
  • K. Rowling: the "Harry Potter" series.
  • Ruskin Bond: "The Blue Umbrella", "The Room on the Roof".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗M. Barrie wrote "Peter Pan".
  • ✗Roald Dahl wrote "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".
  • ✗Rudyard Kipling wrote "The Jungle Book".
