Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Kashinath Singh

Detailed Solution

"Kashi Ka Assi" is a Hindi novel by Kashinath Singh, published in 2004.

About the novel:

It is set around Assi Ghat and its neighbourhood in Varanasi (Kashi), Uttar Pradesh.

It is a collection of linked stories (sometimes described as a "novel of sketches") about the people who gather at the famous tea shops near Assi Ghat, especially "Pappu's tea shop", where locals discuss politics, religion and society.

It covers the period of the late 1980s and 1990s, including the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, the Mandal Commission and economic liberalisation, and their effect on the city.

It is known for its sharp humour, satire and the use of the local Bhojpuri-influenced dialect of Banaras, including earthy language.

In 2018, it was made into the Hindi film "Mohalla Assi", starring Sunny Deol.

About Kashinath Singh:

  • He was born in 1937 in Jiyanpur village, Chandauli district, Uttar Pradesh.
  • He was a professor of Hindi at Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
  • His other works include "Apna Morcha", "Rehan Par Ragghu" (which won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2011) and "Upsanhar".
  • His elder brother, Namvar Singh (1926-2019), was one of the most influential Hindi literary critics.

Other famous Hindi novels:

  • "Raag Darbari": Shrilal Shukla (1968), a satire on rural politics.
  • "Aadha Gaon": Rahi Masoom Raza, about a village in Ghazipur during Partition.
  • "Maila Anchal": Phanishwar Nath Renu.
  • "Tamas": Bhisham Sahni.

Rahi Masoom Raza also wrote the dialogues of B. R. Chopra's TV serial "Mahabharat" (1988).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Namvar Singh was a literary critic and Kashinath Singh's elder brother.
  • ✗Shrilal Shukla wrote "Raag Darbari".
  • ✗Rahi Masoom Raza wrote "Aadha Gaon".

Quick tip

Remember: "Kashi Ka Assi" (2004; Assi Ghat, Varanasi; film "Mohalla Assi", 2018) = Kashinath Singh (Sahitya Akademi 2011 for "Rehan Par Ragghu"); "Raag Darbari" = Shrilal Shukla.
