Answer: Option D — H. G. Wells
Detailed Solution
- Wells. "The Invisible Man" is a science fiction novel by the English writer Herbert George Wells (H. G. Wells), published in 1897.
About the novel:
It tells the story of Griffin, a scientist who discovers a way to make himself invisible by changing the refractive index of his body to match that of air.
At first he is excited by his power, but he cannot reverse the process. He becomes isolated, desperate and increasingly violent, and is finally killed by a mob.
The novel explores the dangers of science used without moral responsibility, and the effect of power on a person.
About H. G. Wells (1866-1946):
He was born in Bromley, Kent, England, and studied biology under T. H. Huxley.
He is called one of the "fathers of science fiction", along with Jules Verne.
His famous science fiction novels include:
- "The Time Machine" (1895): a traveller goes to the year 802,701 and finds humanity divided into the Eloi and the Morlocks; it popularised the idea of time travel.
- "The Island of Doctor Moreau" (1896).
"The War of the Worlds" (1898): about an invasion of Earth by Martians. A 1938 radio version by Orson Welles caused panic among some listeners.
"The First Men in the Moon" (1901).
He also wrote non-fiction, such as "The Outline of History" (1920) and "A Short History of the World".
Other science fiction and adventure writers:
- Jules Verne (France): "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea", "Around the World in Eighty Days", "Journey to the Centre of the Earth".
- Arthur Conan Doyle: Sherlock Holmes stories and "The Lost World".
- Robert Louis Stevenson: "Treasure Island" and "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde".
- Mary Shelley: "Frankenstein" (1818), often called the first science fiction novel.
