Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Ernest Hemingway

Detailed Solution

"The Old Man and the Sea" and "A Moveable Feast" are works by the American writer Ernest Hemingway.

About "The Old Man and the Sea" (1952):

It is a short novel about Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman who has gone 84 days without catching a fish.

He goes far out into the Gulf Stream and hooks a giant marlin. After a long struggle of three days, he kills it, but sharks eat the fish on his way back, leaving only the skeleton.

The story is about courage, endurance and dignity in defeat. A famous line is "A man can be destroyed but not defeated."

It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953.

About "A Moveable Feast" (1964):

It is a memoir of Hemingway's years as a young, poor writer in Paris in the 1920s, published after his death.

It describes his friendships with writers and artists such as Gertrude Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound and James Joyce, who were part of the "Lost Generation".

  • John Steinbeck: "The Grapes of Wrath"; Nobel Prize (1962).
