Who wrote the book 'The Republic'?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Plato

Detailed Solution

"The Republic" is a philosophical dialogue written by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato around 375 BCE. It is one of the most influential works of Western philosophy and political theory.

About The Republic:

  • It is written as a series of conversations in which Socrates, Plato's teacher, discusses justice with other characters.
  • It asks: "What is justice?" and "Is the just person happier than the unjust person?"

To answer, Socrates describes an ideal city-state (kallipolis) divided into three classes: rulers (guardians), auxiliaries (soldiers) and producers (farmers, craftsmen and traders). Justice means each class doing its own proper work.

Plato argued that the ideal state should be ruled by "philosopher-kings", who love wisdom and know the truth.

It contains the famous "Allegory of the Cave", which compares people without philosophical education to prisoners in a cave who see only shadows and mistake them for reality.

It also discusses education, the theory of "Forms" (ideas), and the dangers of democracy and tyranny.

About Plato (about 428-348 BCE):

  • He was born in Athens and was a student of Socrates.
  • He founded the Academy in Athens (about 387 BCE), one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in the Western world.
  • His other dialogues include "Apology" (Socrates's defence at his trial), "Phaedo", "Symposium" and "Laws".

Other Greek and political thinkers:

  • Socrates (about 470-399 BCE): Plato's teacher; he wrote nothing himself; known through Plato's dialogues; executed by drinking hemlock.
  • Aristotle (384-322 BCE): Plato's student and teacher of Alexander the Great; wrote "Politics" and "Nicomachean Ethics"; called the "Father of Political Science".
  • Niccolò Machiavelli (Italy, 1469-1527): "The Prince" (1532).
  • Kautilya (Chanakya): "Arthashastra", an ancient Indian treatise on statecraft.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Aristotle wrote "Politics".
  • ✗Socrates did not write any books.
  • ✗Machiavelli wrote "The Prince".

Quick tip

Remember: "The Republic" (about 375 BCE; philosopher-king; Allegory of the Cave) = Plato (founded the Academy); "Politics" = Aristotle; "The Prince" = Machiavelli; "Arthashastra" = Kautilya.
