Answer: Option D — Kolkata

Detailed Solution

The headquarters of the Eastern Command of the Indian Army is located at Fort William, in Kolkata, West Bengal.

About the Eastern Command:

  • It is responsible for the defence of India's eastern and north-eastern borders, including the borders with China (in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh), Myanmar, Bangladesh and Bhutan.
  • It also carries out counter-insurgency operations in the north-eastern states.
  • It is headed by a General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), a Lieutenant General.

It played a decisive role in the 1971 India-Pakistan war, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora, its commander, accepted the surrender of about 93,000 Pakistani troops in Dhaka on 16 December 1971.

About Fort William:

It was first built by the British East India Company between 1696 and 1706 and named after King William III of England.

After the Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daulah, captured Calcutta in 1756, a new Fort William was built under Robert Clive after the Battle of Plassey (1757). It was completed in 1781.

Fort William has recently been renamed "Vijay Durg".

Commands of the Indian Army:

The Indian Army has seven commands (six operational and one training):

  • Northern Command: Udhampur (Jammu and Kashmir).
  • Western Command: Chandimandir (Haryana).
  • South Western Command: Jaipur (Rajasthan); the newest, created in 2005.
  • Central Command: Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh).
  • Eastern Command: Kolkata (West Bengal).
  • Southern Command: Pune (Maharashtra); the oldest command.
  • Army Training Command (ARTRAC): Shimla (Himachal Pradesh).

Tri-service commands:

  • Andaman and Nicobar Command (Port Blair/Sri Vijaya Puram): India's only tri-service theatre command, created in 2001.
  • Strategic Forces Command (2003): manages India's nuclear weapons.

Other army facts:

  • Army Day is celebrated on 15 January.
  • The headquarters of the Assam Rifles is in Shillong, Meghalaya.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Lucknow is the headquarters of the Central Command.
  • ✗Shillong is the headquarters of the Assam Rifles and the IAF's Eastern Air Command.
  • ✗Guwahati has other army formations, but not the command headquarters.

Quick tip

Remember: Eastern Command HQ = Fort William, Kolkata (recently renamed Vijay Durg; 1971 war under Lt. Gen. J. S. Aurora); Northern = Udhampur; Western = Chandimandir; Southern = Pune; Central = Lucknow; SW = Jaipur; ARTRAC = Shimla.

Defence Technology & Missiles — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Defence Technology & Missiles, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's defence technology: the missiles developed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme and later, their types and ranges, DRDO, defence equipment such as aircraft, tanks, submarines and warships, and military exercises with other countries. Common questions ask what type a missile is (Prithvi is surface-to-surface, Akash is surface-to-air, and Nag is anti-tank), which missile was developed with Russia (BrahMos), and which countries take part in a joint exercise. Lists of exercises and newly inducted equipment change often, so check current affairs as well. Practise the defence technology and missiles questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
