Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Hammir Dev Chauhan

Detailed Solution

When Alauddin Khalji attacked and captured the fort of Ranthambore in 1301 CE, the ruler was Hammir Dev (Hammiradeva), of the Chauhan (Chahamana) dynasty of Ranthambore.

Background:

  • Hammir Dev gave shelter to some Mongol (neo-Muslim) soldiers who had rebelled against Alauddin's generals during the return from the Gujarat campaign.
  • He refused to hand them over to Alauddin, which led to the war.

The siege:

  • Alauddin first sent his generals Ulugh Khan and Nusrat Khan against Ranthambore.
  • Nusrat Khan was killed by a stone from a catapult during the siege, and the Delhi army suffered a setback.
  • Alauddin then came himself to lead the siege, which lasted several months.
  • Some of Hammir's ministers betrayed him.
  • The fort was finally captured in July 1301.
  • Hammir Dev died fighting, and the women of the fort performed jauhar.
  • This is regarded as the first recorded jauhar in Rajasthan's history.
  • The Mongol rebels who had been sheltered also fought to the end.
  • Amir Khusrau, who accompanied Alauddin, described the siege.

About Hammir Dev:

  • He ruled Ranthambore from about 1283 to 1301.
  • He was a brave ruler, and had successfully resisted the attacks of Jalaluddin Khalji earlier.
  • His life is celebrated in the Sanskrit poem "Hammira Mahakavya" by the Jain poet Nayachandra Suri (15th century), and in the Hindi poem "Hammir Raso".

About Ranthambore fort:

  • It is located in the Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan, within the Ranthambore National Park (a tiger reserve).
  • It is part of the "Hill Forts of Rajasthan" UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Other Rajput rulers who fought Alauddin:

  • Rana Ratan Singh of Chittor.
  • Rai Karan (Karna) of Gujarat.
  • Kanhadadeva of Jalor.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Rana Ratan Singh ruled Chittor.
  • ✗Rai Karan ruled Gujarat.
  • ✗Kanhadadeva ruled Jalor.

Quick tip

Remember: Ranthambore (1301) = Hammir Dev Chauhan (sheltered Mongol rebels; Nusrat Khan killed in the siege; first jauhar); Hammira Mahakavya = Nayachandra Suri.
