In ______ the East India Company's ships defeated the Portuguese in the Swally estuary off Surat.

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — 1612

Detailed Solution

The English East India Company's ships defeated the Portuguese at the Swally (Suvali) estuary near Surat in November 1612, so the answer is (C). The battle was led by Captain Thomas Best and began to break the Portuguese monopoly in Indian waters. Impressed by this victory, the Mughal emperor Jahangir granted the English a farman in 1613 to set up a permanent factory at Surat. In '1609' Captain William Hawkins was at Jahangir's court, but trading permission had not been granted. '1610' has no link with this battle. '1618' belongs to the embassy of Sir Thomas Roe (1615-1619). The first English factory opened at Masulipatnam in 1611.
