Answer: Option A — Venice (Italy)

Detailed Solution

Niccolao Manucci (1638-1717) was a Venetian (Italian) traveller and writer who spent most of his life in India, during the reign of Aurangzeb and after.

His life in India:

  • He ran away from Venice as a teenager and reached India in 1656, in the company of an English traveller.
  • He joined the service of Prince Dara Shikoh as an artilleryman (gunner), and served him during the war of succession (1657-1659).
  • After Dara's defeat, he worked for several Mughal nobles, including Raja Jai Singh of Amber.
  • He later became a self-taught physician, and practised medicine in Lahore, Agra, Delhi and elsewhere.
  • He lived for many years in Madras and Pondicherry, under the English and French, and served as an interpreter and negotiator.
  • He died in India (in Madras or Pondicherry), around 1717-1720.

His book:

  • His account, "Storia do Mogor" ("History of the Mughals"), was written in Italian, French and Portuguese.
  • It covers the history of the Mughals, the war of succession, the reign of Aurangzeb, and life in India.
  • It describes the Mughal court, the harem, the army, trade, medicine, customs and religions of India.
  • It contains many lively stories and gossip, and some of its information is unreliable, but it is a valuable source.
  • It was translated into English by William Irvine in the early 20th century.

Other European travellers:

  • Francois Bernier: a physician who visited during Shah Jahan's and Aurangzeb's reigns.
  • Peter Mundy: an English trader.
  • Jean de Thevenot: a French traveller who visited India in 1666.
  • John Fryer: an English physician who visited in the 1670s.

About Venice:

  • Venice was a major trading city of Italy, with long-standing trade links with the East through the Mediterranean.
  • The famous earlier traveller Marco Polo was also from Venice.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Manucci was not from Paris, Lisbon or London.
