Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Treaty of Yandaboo

Detailed Solution

The Treaty of Yandaboo, signed on 24 February 1826, ended the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-1826).

Background:

  • In the early 19th century, the Burmese kingdom (under the Konbaung dynasty) expanded westwards, conquering Arakan, Manipur and Assam.
  • This brought the Burmese into conflict with the British, who controlled Bengal.
  • Disputes over the borders, especially in the Chittagong area, led to war in 1824.

The war:

  • It was fought under the Governor-General Lord Amherst.
  • The Burmese general Maha Bandula was a famous commander, who was killed in the war.
  • The British sent forces by sea and captured Rangoon, and then advanced up the Irrawaddy river towards Ava, the Burmese capital.
  • The war was very costly and many soldiers died of disease.
  • The treaty was signed at Yandaboo, a village near Ava, when British forces were close to the capital.

Terms of the treaty:

  • The Burmese king gave up all claims over Assam, Manipur, Cachar and Jaintia.
  • The British got Arakan and Tenasserim (Tanintharyi), coastal provinces of Burma.
  • The Burmese paid a large war indemnity (one crore rupees).
  • A British Resident was to be accepted at Ava.
  • A commercial treaty was to be signed.

Results:

  • The British gained control over Assam and other parts of north-east India.
  • Manipur's ruler, Gambhir Singh, was recognised as independent.

Later wars:

  • The Second Anglo-Burmese War (1852): Lower Burma annexed.
  • The Third Anglo-Burmese War (1885): Upper Burma annexed; the whole of Burma became part of British India.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Treaty of Gandamak was with Afghanistan.
  • ✗The Treaty of Sugauli was with Nepal.
  • ✗The Treaty of Bassein was with the Peshwa.

Quick tip

Remember: Treaty of Yandaboo (24 February 1826) = end of the First Anglo-Burmese War (Lord Amherst); Burma gave up Assam, Manipur, Cachar; British got Arakan and Tenasserim.
