Answer: Option D — Manipur
Detailed Solution
Rani Gaidinliu (1915-1993) was a Naga spiritual and political leader who led a revolt against British rule in the north-east. She was born on 26 January 1915 at Nungkao (Longkao) village in the Tamenglong district of present-day Manipur. She belonged to the Rongmei tribe, part of the Zeliangrong Naga group.
At the age of 13, Gaidinliu joined the Heraka movement led by her cousin, Haipou Jadonang. The movement aimed to revive the traditional Naga religion and to drive out the British. After Jadonang was arrested and hanged by the British in 1931, Gaidinliu, then only 16, took over the leadership. She led an armed revolt, asking people not to pay taxes and to resist British rule. The British launched a massive hunt for her across the Naga hills. She was captured in October 1932 and sentenced to life imprisonment. She remained in jails in Guwahati, Shillong, Aizawl and Tura for about 14 years.
In 1937, Jawaharlal Nehru met her in Shillong jail and was deeply impressed by her courage. He called her the "daughter of the hills" and gave her the title "Rani" (Queen). He also wrote about her in the international press, demanding her release. She was finally released in 1947 after India became independent.
After independence, she continued to work for the welfare of her people. She was awarded the Tamrapatra Freedom Fighter award (1972), the Padma Bhushan (1982) and, after her death, the Birsa Munda Award (1996). The Government of India issued a postal stamp in her honour in 1996 and a commemorative coin in 2015, marking her birth centenary.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Assam, Mizoram and Tripura are other north-eastern states, but she was born in Manipur, though she was jailed in several places in the region.
