Where was Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose born?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Cuttack (Odisha)

Detailed Solution

Subhas Chandra Bose was born on 23 January 1897 in Cuttack, then part of the Bengal Presidency and now in Odisha. His father, Janakinath Bose, was a well-known lawyer in Cuttack, and his mother was Prabhavati Devi. His birthday is celebrated as "Parakram Diwas" (Day of Valour) since 2021. His birthplace in Cuttack, the Janakinath Bhawan, is now a museum.

Bose studied at the Presidency College and the Scottish Church College in Calcutta and then at Cambridge. In 1920, he passed the Indian Civil Service (ICS) examination, standing fourth, but he resigned in 1921 to join the freedom struggle, inspired by the Non-Cooperation Movement. His political mentor was Chittaranjan Das.

Bose became a leading figure of the younger, more radical wing of the Congress. He was elected President of the Indian National Congress at the Haripura session (1938) and again at the Tripuri session (1939), when he defeated Pattabhi Sitaramayya, Gandhi's candidate. Because of differences with Gandhi and others, he resigned and formed the Forward Bloc in 1939.

In 1941, he escaped from house arrest in Calcutta and reached Germany. In 1943, he went to South-east Asia and took charge of the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj), first organised by Mohan Singh and Rash Behari Bose. He set up the Provisional Government of Free India (Azad Hind) in Singapore on 21 October 1943. He gave the slogans "Delhi Chalo" and "Give me blood, and I will give you freedom", and first addressed Gandhi as the "Father of the Nation" in a radio broadcast in 1944. He is believed to have died in a plane crash in Taiwan on 18 August 1945, though this has been the subject of controversy.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Kolkata was the centre of his political activity, but not his birthplace.
  • ✗Dhaka and Allahabad are not connected with his birth.
