India's first floating missile test range is:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — INS Anvesh

Detailed Solution

INS Anvesh is India's first floating missile test range (FTR). It is a specialised ship developed for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi, Kerala.

What a floating test range does:

It acts as a mobile missile testing platform at sea. Missiles can be launched from it, or it can track and monitor missiles launched from land or other ships.

It carries advanced radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry systems to collect data during missile tests.

Because it can move far out into the ocean, it allows India to test long-range missiles and missile defence systems without being limited by land-based test ranges or the need to clear large areas of land.

INS Anvesh has been used to test India's sea-based ballistic missile defence systems. For example, in April 2023, the DRDO and the Indian Navy successfully tested a sea-based endo-atmospheric interceptor missile from a ship in the Bay of Bengal to intercept an incoming ballistic missile, giving India the capability of a naval ballistic missile defence system.

India's land-based missile test ranges include the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur and Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Island (Wheeler Island), both in Odisha.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗INS Vikrant is India's first indigenous aircraft carrier, commissioned in September 2022.
  • ✗INS Arihant is India's first indigenously built nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, commissioned in 2016.

INS Dhruv is India's first satellite and ballistic missile tracking ship, commissioned in 2021 and built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam. It is easily confused with Anvesh: Dhruv tracks missiles and satellites, while Anvesh is a floating test range.

Quick tip

Remember: INS Anvesh = first floating missile test range (DRDO, Cochin Shipyard); INS Dhruv = missile tracking ship; INS Vikrant = first indigenous aircraft carrier; INS Arihant = first SSBN.

This question tests your understanding of Firsts in India & World, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers the first persons and events in India and the world: the first Indian to win a Nobel Prize, the first woman to hold major offices, the first to climb Everest or reach space, and India's first institutions, newspapers, railways and satellites. It also covers the largest, longest, highest and smallest records in India and the world. These are pure memory questions, so revise them as short lists by theme: first women, first in sports, first in science and space, and first in governance. Be careful with the exact wording, such as 'first Indian' versus 'first person of Indian origin', or 'first woman President' versus 'first woman Prime Minister', since options are often designed to exploit this. Practise the firsts in India and the world questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
