Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Raj Bhavan, Mumbai

Detailed Solution

In 2016, a large British-era underground bunker was discovered beneath the lawns of Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor of Maharashtra, at Malabar Hill in Mumbai. The bunker had been sealed and forgotten for decades. It is about 15,000 square feet in size and has 13 rooms of different sizes, with names such as "Shell Store", "Gun Shell", "Cartridge Store" and "Workshop". It was built in the late 19th century, during the British period, and was used to store arms and ammunition for the guns placed on the coast to defend Bombay from attack by sea.

In June 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a museum in the bunker called "Krantigatha" (the gallery of revolutionaries). It is described as India's first underground bunker museum. It is dedicated to the revolutionaries of India's freedom struggle, especially those of Maharashtra and those who fought with arms against British rule. It includes:

Exhibits on revolutionaries such as Vasudev Balwant Phadke, the Chapekar brothers, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Madam Bhikaiji Cama, and members of the Ghadar movement.

Information on the 1946 Royal Indian Navy mutiny in Bombay.

Displays on the history of the bunker itself.

Raj Bhavan, Mumbai, stands on a promontory facing the Arabian Sea and is surrounded by thick greenery. The museum was created as part of the "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav", the celebration of 75 years of India's independence.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Cellular Jail (Kala Pani) in Port Blair, now Sri Vijaya Puram, is a national memorial where freedom fighters were imprisoned.
  • ✗The Red Fort in Delhi houses museums, including the Azad Hind Fauj museum, but not an underground bunker museum.
  • ✗Fort William in Kolkata is the headquarters of the Indian Army's Eastern Command.

Quick tip

Remember: India's first underground bunker museum = "Krantigatha", Raj Bhavan, Mumbai (bunker found 2016, museum opened June 2022), dedicated to revolutionaries.
