Chauri Chaura, famous for the incident of 1922, is located in which district of Uttar Pradesh?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Gorakhpur

Detailed Solution

Chauri Chaura is a town in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh. It is famous for the Chauri Chaura incident of 5 February 1922, which led Mahatma Gandhi to call off the Non-Cooperation Movement.

About the Chauri Chaura incident:

  • During the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-22), volunteers were picketing a liquor shop and a market at Chauri Chaura to protest against high food prices and liquor sales.
  • The police beat and arrested some of the leaders and fired on the crowd, killing some people.
  • In anger, a large crowd attacked the police station (thana) and set it on fire.
  • Twenty-two (or twenty-three) policemen who were inside were killed.

Gandhi's reaction:

Gandhi was deeply shocked by the violence. He believed that the people were not yet ready for non-violent mass action.

On 12 February 1922, the Congress Working Committee, meeting at Bardoli, suspended the Non-Cooperation Movement, at Gandhi's request.

Many leaders, such as Motilal Nehru, C. R. Das and Subhas Chandra Bose, were unhappy with the decision.

Gandhi was arrested in March 1922 and sentenced to six years in prison for sedition.

After the trial:

The British court sentenced 172 people to death. After appeals, in which Madan Mohan Malaviya defended the accused, the Allahabad High Court confirmed the death sentence for 19 people.

Consequences:

The suspension led to the formation of the Swaraj Party (1923) by C. R. Das and Motilal Nehru.

Some young nationalists, disappointed by the withdrawal, turned to revolutionary methods.

The centenary of the incident was commemorated in 2021-22, with a memorial and a postage stamp.

About the Non-Cooperation Movement:

  • It was launched on 1 August 1920 and was linked to the Khilafat Movement.
  • It included the boycott of foreign goods, government schools and colleges, law courts and legislatures, and the surrender of titles.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Ballia is known for its role in the Quit India Movement (1942).
  • ✗Meerut is where the Revolt of 1857 began.
  • ✗Kanpur was a centre of the 1857 revolt under Nana Saheb.

Quick tip

Remember: Chauri Chaura = Gorakhpur, UP (5 February 1922; police station burnt; Gandhi withdrew Non-Cooperation at Bardoli, 12 February 1922); Swaraj Party = 1923.
