Dandi, the coastal village where Gandhi broke the salt law in 1930, is located in which district of present-day Gujarat?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Navsari

Detailed Solution

Dandi, the coastal village where Mahatma Gandhi broke the salt law on 6 April 1930, is located in the Navsari district of present-day Gujarat.

About Dandi:

  • It is a small village on the shore of the Arabian Sea, near the town of Navsari.
  • At the time of the Salt Satyagraha, it was part of the Surat district; the Navsari district was carved out of the Valsad district in 1997.
  • It was chosen because natural salt deposits formed on its seashore, which made it easy to pick up salt and break the law.

The Salt Satyagraha:

  • Gandhi and his volunteers walked from the Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi.
  • They passed through many villages, such as Aslali, Bareja, Navagam, Nadiad, Anand, Borsad and Matwad.
  • On 6 April 1930, after his morning prayers, Gandhi picked up a lump of natural salt from the shore, breaking the law.
  • He said, "With this, I am shaking the foundations of the British Empire."

The National Salt Satyagraha Memorial:

  • A National Salt Satyagraha Memorial was set up at Dandi and inaugurated in January 2019.
  • It has statues of Gandhi and the 80 marchers who accompanied him (counting additions), and solar-powered salt pans where visitors can make salt.

Other salt satyagrahas:

In Kerala, K. Kelappan led a march to Payyanur.

In the North-West Frontier Province, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan's Khudai Khidmatgars took part in the movement.

Other places in Navsari district:

Navsari town was the birthplace of Jamsetji Tata (founder of the Tata group) and of Dadabhai Naoroji.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Surat, Bharuch and Valsad are neighbouring districts.

Quick tip

Remember: Dandi is in Navsari district, Gujarat (salt law broken on 6 April 1930; National Salt Satyagraha Memorial 2019); Navsari = birthplace of Dadabhai Naoroji and Jamsetji Tata.
