Answer: Option D — Kerala
Detailed Solution
"Kudumbashree" is the poverty eradication and women's empowerment programme of the Government of Kerala. It was launched on 17 May 1998.
About Kudumbashree:
- The name means "prosperity of the family" in Malayalam.
- It is implemented by the State Poverty Eradication Mission (SPEM) of the Kerala government, working closely with local self-government institutions (panchayats and municipalities).
- It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Malappuram.
- It is one of the largest women's self-help networks in Asia, with several million women members.
Its structure has three tiers:
- Neighbourhood Groups (NHGs): the basic units, each with about 10 to 20 women from neighbouring households.
- Area Development Societies (ADS): at the ward level.
- Community Development Societies (CDS): at the panchayat or municipality level.
Its activities include:
- Thrift and credit: members save small amounts regularly and give loans to each other.
- Micro-enterprises: such as catering, tailoring, handicrafts, food processing and farming.
- Group farming ("Sangha Krishi"), in which women cultivate leased land.
- Running community kitchens, including "Janakeeya Hotels" that provide low-cost meals.
- Collecting waste through the "Haritha Karma Sena".
- Social programmes for destitute families, the elderly and people with disabilities.
Recognition:
It is a "National Resource Organisation" under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM, now Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-NRLM), and helps other states set up similar programmes.
Similar programmes elsewhere:
- Andhra Pradesh: "Velugu" (Indira Kranthi Patham), a self-help group programme.
- Tamil Nadu: "Mahalir Thittam".
- Self-help groups (SHGs) are also supported by NABARD's SHG-Bank Linkage Programme (1992).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Tamil Nadu runs the "Mahalir Thittam" programme.
- ✗Andhra Pradesh ran the "Velugu" programme.
- ✗Karnataka has the "Stree Shakti" programme.
Quick tip
Remember: Kudumbashree = Kerala (17 May 1998; "prosperity of the family"; three tiers: NHG, ADS, CDS; national resource organisation under DAY-NRLM).
