What does 'SAGY' stand for?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana

Detailed Solution

SAGY stands for "Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana" ("Members of Parliament Model Village Scheme").

About SAGY:

  • It was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 11 October 2014, the birth anniversary of Jayaprakash Narayan ("Lok Nayak").
  • It is run by the Ministry of Rural Development.
  • Under it, each Member of Parliament (MP) adopts a village (gram panchayat) and develops it into an "Adarsh Gram" (model village).

Targets:

  • Each MP was to develop one village by 2016.
  • Two more villages were to be developed by 2019.
  • Five more villages (one per year) were to be developed between 2019 and 2024.

Rules for choosing a village:

  • Lok Sabha MPs choose a village from their constituency.
  • Rajya Sabha MPs choose a village from the state from which they were elected.
  • Nominated MPs can choose a village from any district in the country.
  • MPs cannot choose their own village or their spouse's village.
  • In plain areas, the village should have a population of 3,000-5,000; in hilly, tribal and difficult areas, 1,000-3,000.

Features:

It does not have separate funds. MPs use resources from existing schemes, the MPLADS (Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme), the gram panchayat's own revenue, and CSR funds.

It focuses on the overall development of the village: personal development (health, education, hygiene), human development, social development, economic development, environmental development, basic amenities and good governance.

It is inspired by Gandhian ideas of "Gram Swaraj" (village self-rule).

Similar schemes:

  • Many states have launched their own versions, such as the "Vidhayak Adarsh Gram Yojana" for MLAs.
  • "Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana" (PMAGY, 2009-10): for villages with a large Scheduled Caste population.

Related scheme:

MPLADS (1993): each MP can recommend development works worth 5 crore rupees per year in their constituency.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗"Swachh Adarsh Gram Yojana" is not the correct expansion.
  • ✗"Samagra Adarsh Gramin Yojana" is not the correct expansion.
  • ✗"Sarva Adarsh Gram Yojana" is not the correct expansion.

Quick tip

Remember: SAGY = Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (11 October 2014, Jayaprakash Narayan's birth anniversary; each MP adopts villages; Ministry of Rural Development; no separate funds); PMAGY = SC-majority villages; MPLADS = 5 crore per year.
