What is the full form of SJSRY, an urban employment scheme launched in 1997?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana

Detailed Solution

SJSRY stands for "Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana" ("Golden Jubilee Urban Employment Scheme").

About SJSRY:

  • It was launched on 1 December 1997, in the 50th year (golden jubilee, "Swarna Jayanti") of India's independence.
  • It was a centrally sponsored scheme run by the Ministry of Urban Affairs (later the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation).
  • Its funding was shared between the Centre and the states in the ratio of 75:25.
  • It replaced three earlier urban poverty programmes: the Nehru Rozgar Yojana (NRY, 1989), the Urban Basic Services for the Poor (UBSP) and the Prime Minister's Integrated Urban Poverty Eradication Programme (PMIUPEP).
  • Its aim was to provide gainful employment to the urban unemployed and underemployed poor, through self-employment ventures and wage employment.

Its components (after revision in 2009):

  • Urban Self-Employment Programme (USEP): subsidised loans for individual micro-enterprises.
  • Urban Women Self-help Programme (UWSP): support for groups of urban poor women.
  • Skill Training for Employment Promotion amongst Urban Poor (STEP-UP).
  • Urban Wage Employment Programme (UWEP): wage work on public assets in small towns.
  • Urban Community Development Network (UCDN).

Its successor:

SJSRY was replaced by the "National Urban Livelihoods Mission" (NULM) in 2013-14, which was renamed the "Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission" (DAY-NULM).

Similar rural scheme:

"Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana" (SGSY), launched on 1 April 1999 for rural self-employment, was restructured as the "National Rural Livelihood Mission" (NRLM, "Aajeevika") in 2011, now DAY-NRLM.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗"Swarna Jayanti Swarozgar Rural Yojana" is not the correct expansion.
  • ✗"Sampoorna Jan Shahari Rozgar Yojana" is not the correct expansion.
  • ✗"Swachh Jal Shahari Rozgar Yojana" is not the correct expansion.

Quick tip

Remember: SJSRY = Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana (urban; 1 December 1997; replaced NRY, UBSP, PMIUPEP; later DAY-NULM); SGSY = Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (rural; 1999; later NRLM, 2011).
