National Consumer Day is celebrated in India on:
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option C — 24 December
Detailed Solution
National Consumer Day (National Consumer Rights Day) is observed in India every year on 24 December. On this day in 1986, the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 received the assent of the President. The Act was a landmark law that gave consumers legal rights and set up a simple, quick and inexpensive system for settling consumer complaints.
The Consumer Protection Act, 1986 was replaced by the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which came into force on 20 July 2020. The new Act strengthened consumer protection in several ways:
It set up the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) to protect consumer rights, investigate violations and take action against unfair trade practices and misleading advertisements, including penalties on celebrities who endorse misleading ads.
It covers e-commerce and online transactions.
It introduced product liability, making manufacturers and sellers responsible for harm caused by defective products.
It allows consumers to file complaints from where they live and electronically (e-Daakhil portal).
It provides for mediation to settle disputes.
Consumer disputes are heard by a three-tier system of Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions at the district, state and national levels, based on the value of the goods or services.
The six basic consumer rights recognised in India are the right to safety, the right to be informed, the right to choose, the right to be heard, the right to seek redressal and the right to consumer education.
The government runs the "Jago Grahak Jago" ("Wake up, consumer") awareness campaign and the National Consumer Helpline (1915).
World Consumer Rights Day is observed on 15 March. It marks the date in 1962 when US President John F. Kennedy addressed the US Congress on consumer rights, the first world leader to do so.
Why not the other options?
- ✗15 March is World Consumer Rights Day.
- ✗1 July is National Doctors' Day (and Chartered Accountants' Day) in India.
- ✗5 June is World Environment Day.
Quick tip
Remember: National Consumer Day = 24 December (Consumer Protection Act 1986); World Consumer Rights Day = 15 March (J.F. Kennedy, 1962); new Act 2019 created the CCPA; slogan "Jago Grahak Jago".
