World Water Day is celebrated every year on:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — 22 March

Detailed Solution

World Water Day is an annual United Nations observance held on 22 March to highlight the importance of freshwater and to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. It was proposed at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (the Earth Summit) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The UN General Assembly declared 22 March as World Water Day, and it was first observed in 1993.

Each year, World Water Day has a theme, focusing on a different aspect of water, such as water and climate change, groundwater, sanitation, peace, or glacier preservation. For example, the theme for 2024 was "Water for Peace", and for 2025 it was "Glacier Preservation". The United Nations World Water Development Report is released on this day. It is coordinated by UN-Water.

World Water Day supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6): to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030. According to UN estimates, around 2 billion people still lack access to safely managed drinking water.

India faces serious water challenges. It has about 18% of the world's population but only about 4% of the world's freshwater resources. Groundwater is being over-extracted in many states. Important initiatives in India include:

Jal Jeevan Mission (2019): to provide tap water connections (Har Ghar Jal) to every rural household.

Jal Shakti Abhiyan (2019) and "Catch the Rain" campaign: for water conservation and rainwater harvesting.

Atal Bhujal Yojana (2019): for community-led groundwater management.

Namami Gange (2014): to clean and rejuvenate the Ganga.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti was formed in 2019 by merging the Ministries of Water Resources and Drinking Water and Sanitation.
