The Pavri Naach of Maharashtra and Gujarat is performed by which tribe?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option D — Kokna tribe
Detailed Solution
Pavri Naach (Pawri dance) is a traditional dance of the Kokna (Kokani) tribe, who live mainly in the Nashik, Thane, Palghar and Dhule districts of Maharashtra, the Dang and Valsad districts of Gujarat, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
The dance is named after the "pavri" (pawri), a wind instrument that accompanies it. The pavri is made from a dried bottle gourd (dudhi) with two bamboo pipes attached, and sometimes a horn at the end. It produces a sweet but piercing sound, rather like a pungi. The pavri player stands in the centre, and the dancers move around him.
Features of the dance:
- It is performed by both men and women, who hold each other by the waist or shoulders and dance in a circle or a long chain.
- The dance often ends with acrobatic formations, such as human pyramids.
- It is performed after the harvest, at festivals and on happy occasions, to thank the gods (such as Kansari, the goddess of grain) for a good harvest.
The Kokna tribe is one of the major tribes of western India. They are mainly farmers who grow rice and nagli (ragi). They are known for their own form of wall painting, which is similar to Warli painting.
Other tribal dances of western India:
- Tarpa dance: of the Warli tribe, named after the tarpa (a wind instrument made from a dried gourd).
- Dhol dance: of the Bhil tribe.
- Dhamal dance: of the Siddi community of Gujarat, of African origin.
- Dangi dance: of the tribes of the Dang district, Gujarat.
Why not the other options?
- ✗The Warli tribe performs the Tarpa dance.
- ✗The Gond tribe performs the Karma and Saila dances.
- ✗The Siddi community of Gujarat performs the Dhamal dance.
Quick tip
Remember: Pavri Naach = Kokna tribe (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Dadra and Nagar Haveli), named after the pavri wind instrument; Tarpa = Warli; Dhamal = Siddi.

Indian Dance Forms — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Indian Dance Forms, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
Indian dance forms are one of the most frequently tested areas of static GK. This topic covers the eight classical dances recognised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi (Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri, Mohiniyattam and Sattriya), the folk and tribal dances of every state, and related terms such as mudra, abhinaya, lasya and tandava. Most questions ask which state a dance belongs to, which community performs it, or which feature identifies a classical style. Learn the classical dances with their state and one signature feature each, such as the face make-up of Kathakali or the brass plate of Kuchipudi. For folk dances, group them state by state, since exams often list three or four dances and ask for the common state. Watch for dances shared by more than one state, such as Chhau, which has three styles. Practise the Indian dance forms questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
