The Sangrai dance of Tripura is performed by which community?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Mog community

Detailed Solution

Sangrai dance is performed by the Mog (Marma) community of Tripura during the Sangrai festival, which is celebrated in the month of Chaitra (around the middle of April). It marks the New Year of the Mog people and coincides with the New Year festivals of many communities in South and Southeast Asia, such as Bihu, Baisakhi and the Thingyan water festival of Myanmar.

The Mogs are a Buddhist community of Arakanese (Rakhine) origin, who came from the Arakan region of present-day Myanmar. In India, they live mainly in the South Tripura district (such as Sabroom and Belonia), and also in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. They are a Scheduled Tribe in Tripura.

Features of the Sangrai festival and dance:

  • Young men and women dance together in a group to the music of traditional instruments.
  • Young people sprinkle water on each other, like the Thingyan festival of Myanmar, as a symbol of washing away the sins of the old year.
  • People visit Buddhist temples (kyangs), bathe the Buddha statues with water, offer prayers, and pay respects to elders.

Tripura has 19 Scheduled Tribes. Some other tribal dances of Tripura:

  • Hojagiri dance: of the Reang (Bru) tribe, in which women balance pitchers and lamps on their heads while dancing on earthen pots.
  • Garia dance: of the Tripuri and Jamatia tribes, during the Garia Puja after sowing.
  • Bizu dance: of the Chakma community, during the Bizu festival (New Year).
  • Lebang Boomani dance: performed during the harvest season by the Tripuri people.
  • Wangala dance: of the Garo community.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Reang (Bru) community performs the Hojagiri dance.
  • ✗The Chakma community performs the Bizu dance.
  • ✗The Jamatia community performs the Garia dance.

Quick tip

Remember: Sangrai = Mog (Marma) Buddhists of Tripura, New Year in April, water sprinkling; Hojagiri = Reang; Bizu = Chakma; Garia = Tripuri/Jamatia.

Indian Dance Forms — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Indian Dance Forms, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

Indian dance forms are one of the most frequently tested areas of static GK. This topic covers the eight classical dances recognised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi (Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri, Mohiniyattam and Sattriya), the folk and tribal dances of every state, and related terms such as mudra, abhinaya, lasya and tandava. Most questions ask which state a dance belongs to, which community performs it, or which feature identifies a classical style. Learn the classical dances with their state and one signature feature each, such as the face make-up of Kathakali or the brass plate of Kuchipudi. For folk dances, group them state by state, since exams often list three or four dances and ask for the common state. Watch for dances shared by more than one state, such as Chhau, which has three styles. Practise the Indian dance forms questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
