Answer: Option A — Mizoram
Detailed Solution
Phawngpui, also called the "Blue Mountain", is the highest peak of Mizoram, at about 2,157 metres. It is located in the Lawngtlai district in south-eastern Mizoram, near the border with Myanmar.
About Phawngpui:
- The name comes from the Mara/Lai language and refers to its grassy meadows; it is called the "Blue Mountain" because of the bluish haze that often covers it.
- In Mizo folklore, it is believed to be the abode of gods and spirits, and it is considered sacred by the local people.
The area around the peak was declared the Phawngpui Blue Mountain National Park in 1992. It covers about 50 square kilometres.
It has a mix of subtropical and temperate forests, bamboo groves and grassy slopes.
It is rich in orchids and rhododendrons, which bloom in spring.
Animals include the mountain goat (goral), serow, barking deer, clouded leopard, leopard cat and Himalayan black bear.
It is an important area for birds, including the rare Blyth's tragopan and the Mrs. Hume's pheasant.
A steep cliff called "Thlazuang khamm" is a famous feature of the mountain.
About Mizoram's geography:
- It is a land of hills and valleys, with ranges running from north to south.
- The Tropic of Cancer passes through it.
- Its main rivers are the Tlawng (Dhaleswari), Tuirial and Kaladan (Chhimtuipui).
- Other protected areas include the Dampa Tiger Reserve and the Murlen National Park.
Other mountains called "Blue Mountains":
The Nilgiri Hills ("Blue Mountains") in Tamil Nadu: the name means "blue mountains", from the blue haze and the "Neelakurinji" flowers that bloom every 12 years.
Highest peaks of other north-eastern states:
- Sikkim: Kangchenjunga (8,586 m), India's highest peak.
- Arunachal Pradesh: Kangto.
- Nagaland: Mount Saramati.
- Manipur: Mount Iso (Tempu).
- Meghalaya: Shillong Peak.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Tamil Nadu has the Nilgiris, also called the "Blue Mountains", but Phawngpui is in Mizoram.
- ✗Manipur's highest peak is Mount Iso.
- ✗Nagaland's highest peak is Mount Saramati.
Quick tip
Remember: Phawngpui ("Blue Mountain", about 2,157 m) = highest peak of Mizoram (Lawngtlai district; national park 1992; Blyth's tragopan); Nilgiris = "Blue Mountains" of Tamil Nadu.
