Detailed Solution

Bhutan shares a border of about 699 km with India, touching four Indian states: Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Bhutan's borders with Indian states (west to east):

  • Sikkim: a short border in the west.
  • West Bengal: along the northern part of the state, including the Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts.
  • Assam: the longest stretch, along the northern edge of Assam.
  • Arunachal Pradesh: in the east.

About Bhutan:

  • It is a landlocked Himalayan kingdom between India and China (Tibet).
  • Its capital is Thimphu.
  • It is called "Druk Yul", the "Land of the Thunder Dragon".

It is a constitutional monarchy; it held its first parliamentary elections in 2008. The present king is Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.

Its currency is the ngultrum, pegged to the Indian rupee, and the Indian rupee is also accepted there.

Mahayana Buddhism (Drukpa Kagyu school) is the main religion.

Bhutan is the world's first carbon-negative country, absorbing more carbon dioxide than it emits, because more than 70 percent of its land is under forest cover. Its constitution requires that at least 60 percent of the land remain forested.

India-Bhutan relations:

  • The two countries signed a Treaty of Friendship in 1949, updated in 2007.
  • India is Bhutan's largest trade and development partner.

India has helped build several hydroelectric projects in Bhutan, such as Chukha, Tala, Kurichhu and Mangdechhu. Bhutan exports much of this electricity to India, which is a major source of its income.

The border is open, and Indian and Bhutanese citizens can travel without visas.

The Doklam plateau, at the trijunction of India, Bhutan and China, saw a standoff between Indian and Chinese troops in 2017, when China tried to build a road in the area claimed by Bhutan.

Border management:

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) guards India's borders with Bhutan and Nepal.
