Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Daman

Detailed Solution

Daman is the capital of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (DNHDD).

About the merger:

  • The two separate Union Territories of "Dadra and Nagar Haveli" and "Daman and Diu" were merged into a single Union Territory on 26 January 2020.
  • The merger was made by the Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (Merger of Union Territories) Act, 2019, passed by Parliament in December 2019.
  • The aim was to improve administration, reduce duplication of departments and save costs, as the two UTs were small and close to each other and already shared an Administrator.
  • After the merger, India had eight Union Territories (Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir had been created in 2019).
  • The UT has three districts: Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu.
  • It comes under the jurisdiction of the Bombay High Court.
  • It has two seats in the Lok Sabha.

History:

Daman and Diu, along with Goa, were Portuguese colonies until 1961, when they were liberated by "Operation Vijay" (19 December 1961).

Dadra and Nagar Haveli were also Portuguese territories, but local people and volunteers freed them in 1954. They were formally merged with India in 1961 by the 10th Constitutional Amendment.

Goa, Daman and Diu formed one Union Territory until 1987, when Goa became a separate state and Daman and Diu remained a UT.

About the places:

  • Daman: on the coast of the Arabian Sea, near the Gujarat border; famous for its beaches (Devka and Jampore) and the Moti Daman and Nani Daman forts.
  • Diu: an island off the coast of Saurashtra, Gujarat; famous for the Diu Fort, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, and Naida Caves.
  • Silvassa: the former capital of Dadra and Nagar Haveli; it has many industries, and its population is largely tribal (Warli, Dhodia and Kokna).

Union Territories of India now (8):

Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep and Puducherry.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Silvassa was the capital of Dadra and Nagar Haveli before the merger.
  • ✗Diu is a district of the merged UT.
  • ✗Vapi is an industrial town in Gujarat.

Quick tip

Remember: DNHDD = merged UT from 26 January 2020 (Act of 2019), capital Daman, Bombay High Court; Silvassa = former capital of DNH; India now has 8 UTs.
