Answer: Option C — Odisha
Detailed Solution
The Duduma waterfall is formed by the Machkund river on the border of the Koraput district of Odisha and the Alluri Sitharama Raju (formerly Visakhapatnam) district of Andhra Pradesh. It is generally described as being in Odisha.
Features of Duduma Falls:
- The water falls from a height of about 157 to 175 metres, making it one of the highest waterfalls in Odisha.
- The falls are surrounded by dense forests and hills of the Eastern Ghats.
- They are most spectacular during and after the monsoon.
Machkund Hydroelectric Project:
The Machkund Hydroelectric Project, one of the oldest hydroelectric projects of independent India, was built as a joint project of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. It uses the water of the Machkund river near the falls.
The Jalaput Dam is built upstream as part of the project.
About the Machkund river:
- It rises in the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
- Downstream, it is known as the Sileru river and joins the Sabari, a tributary of the Godavari.
Koraput:
- Koraput is a hilly, tribal-majority district in southern Odisha.
- It is known for its traditional agricultural heritage; the Koraput region was declared a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) by the FAO in 2012, for its rice diversity and traditional farming.
- The Bonda, Gadaba, Paraja and Kondh tribes live in the region.
Other waterfalls of Odisha:
- Barehipani and Joranda Falls in Simlipal National Park (Mayurbhanj); Barehipani is the highest waterfall of Odisha.
- Khandadhar Falls in Sundargarh and Keonjhar.
- Sanaghagara Falls near Keonjhar.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Chhattisgarh has the Chitrakote and Tirathgarh falls.
- ✗Jharkhand has the Hundru, Dassam and Lodh falls.
- ✗Telangana has the Kuntala and Bogatha falls.
Quick tip
Remember: Duduma Falls = Machkund river, Koraput (Odisha-Andhra border); Machkund hydro project; Barehipani = highest falls of Odisha.
