Detailed Solution
The Taj Lake Palace, originally called Jag Niwas, stands on an island in Lake Pichola in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
History of the palace:
- It was built between 1743 and 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh II of the Mewar dynasty as a summer palace.
- It is made of white marble and appears to float on the lake.
- It was converted into a luxury hotel in the 1960s and is now run by the Taj Group (Indian Hotels Company).
- It has been featured in several films, including the James Bond film "Octopussy" (1983).
About Lake Pichola:
It is an artificial freshwater lake, created in 1362 by Pichhu Banjara, a grain merchant, during the reign of Maharana Lakha. It was later enlarged by Maharana Udai Singh II, who founded Udaipur in 1559.
It is about 4 km long and 3 km wide.
Other islands in the lake include Jag Mandir, where Prince Khurram (later Shah Jahan) is said to have stayed when he rebelled against his father Jahangir.
The City Palace of Udaipur, a large complex of palaces, stands on the eastern bank of the lake.
Udaipur, the "City of Lakes":
- Udaipur is known as the "City of Lakes" and the "Venice of the East".
- Its lakes include Pichola, Fateh Sagar, Udai Sagar, Swaroop Sagar and Doodh Talai.
- Fateh Sagar Lake has the Nehru Garden on an island and the Udaipur Solar Observatory.
Mewar:
Udaipur was the capital of the Mewar kingdom after Chittorgarh. Maharana Pratap, famous for the Battle of Haldighati (1576), belonged to this dynasty.
Recognition:
Udaipur has often been ranked among the best cities in the world for tourism.
