Detailed Solution

The Shirui Lily ("Lilium mackliniae") is the state flower of Manipur.

About the Shirui Lily:

  • It is a rare, pale pink and white, bell-shaped lily.
  • It grows naturally only on the Shirui Kashung hills (Shirui Hill) in the Ukhrul district of Manipur, at heights of about 1,700 to 2,500 metres.
  • It blooms during the monsoon months, from about May to June.
  • It was discovered for the scientific world in 1946 by the British botanist Frank Kingdon-Ward, who named it after his wife, Jean Macklin.
  • It is protected and is regarded as endangered because of its very limited habitat, climate change and human pressure.
  • The local Tangkhul Naga people consider it sacred, and there are local legends associated with it.
  • Attempts to grow it outside its natural habitat have mostly failed.
  • In 1948, it won a Merit Award from the Royal Horticultural Society in London.
  • The "Shirui Lily Festival" has been organised by the Manipur government since 2017 to promote tourism and awareness about protecting the flower.
  • A postage stamp featuring the Shirui Lily was issued by India Post.
