Answer: Option D — Mumbai

Detailed Solution

The Lifeline Express, known in Hindi as "Jeevan Rekha Express", is the world's first hospital train. It began its first journey on 16 July 1991 from Mumbai (then Bombay), from Victoria Terminus (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus).

About the Lifeline Express:

  • It was started by the Impact India Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, in partnership with Indian Railways and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • Its main aim is to provide free medical and surgical care to poor people in remote rural areas, where hospitals and doctors are not easily available.
  • The train has operation theatres, wards, consultation rooms, a pantry and other facilities.
  • It stops at a railway station in a remote area for several weeks at a time, and doctors and volunteers (often from across India and abroad) treat patients.
  • It provides treatments such as cataract surgery, correction of cleft lips, orthopaedic surgery for polio and other disabilities, hearing problems, dental care, and screening for cancer.
  • Since 1991, it has treated lakhs of patients across many states.
  • Newer, better-equipped coaches have been added over the years.

Other special trains in India:

  • Palace on Wheels (1982): a luxury tourist train in Rajasthan.
  • Science Express (2007): a mobile science exhibition train run by the Department of Science and Technology.
  • Red Ribbon Express (2007): an HIV/AIDS awareness train.
  • Bharat Gaurav trains (2021): theme-based tourist trains.
  • Fairy Queen: the oldest working steam locomotive in the world (built in 1855), listed in the Guinness Book of Records.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗New Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai were not the starting point of the Lifeline Express.
